Hussein Chalayan

Spring /Summer collection 1998

This collection is from Hussein Chalayan for the spring/summer in 1998, the catwalk show was placed on a white back grounded stage, the concept was about naturalism of a naked woman. It also represents the Muslim woman’s and indicates the Islamic culture. I think that it meansa lot to a woman thoughts and rights, especially during 1998, it attract attention and in some point it gives the message such as having the freedom or live without a limitations.

Models with feet long white veils only the eyes and feet it shown, the hands inside the veils, standing strainght and seperated all over the stage.

The show was started off with a naked model with the black mask on and the second model entered just after her with a short black veil only the bust areas was covered, the other part of the body were all naked and the eyes were shown. Third model had the same thing with black veil but the length of the veil increased and the most part of the body are covered except her legs, as the other models comes in the length increases more and more until last model. They are six models and white skinned but on the image, you can see three of the model faces are painted in red and  it has the cross sign on it, it symbolises something such as flag of a Muslim country or blood.

I watched the spring/summer 1998 collection video from Hussein Chalayans website, his collections means more than one thing and I personally think that his really creative and open-minded designer. As far as I seen his collections, I think his one of the designers that printed his name in the fashion world because he is not just creating a garment he is putting his artistic side too and brings out that interesting work of collection. I have the link below so if you wanted to look at his amazing collections you can click on.

InSalaam InShalom

The catwalk show for Insalaam InShalom

when the show started the first thing I heard was the music, quite effective to start off with, it gives the sense of power, the floors was designed Israelis and Palestinians six pointed stars in a blue tape, the model were walking one by one over those lines. It was simple but interesting show.

The black and white photographs of models behind the stage and the platted hair style.

Three ASFOUR Insalaam Inshalom – “Judaism and Islam can live side by side” Here is a mixture of different backgrounds the Judaism and Islam, the designers (Three ASFOUR) are Gabi Asfour, Adi Gil and Ange Donhauser, who runs a fashion label since 1998.This collection influenced by both culture, they have used Israelis and Palestinians both: six pointed stars and kaffiyeh patterns, the evil eye and the Hamsa designs.  I was interested with peace and unity message given and were presented on their Spring/Summer 2012 collection, the silhouette was symbolic motifs with print techniques on  billowing, fluttering silk chiffon and silk de chine dresses, on the other hand I find it quiet modernist designs collaborating both traditional printed fabrics, which I think It works really well together. The patterns and the colours were visually effective and I was impressed with the ideas.

“We’ve accumulated the energy of artists and performers who are like-minded,” Asfour said. “We tried to balance things from all sides, though it’s always difficult.”

I found these images while i was doing my research online, the exhibition caught my eye, i personaly did like it and the concept was really inspirational.

“Fashion and beauty are tools to promote togetherness and unity in different countries and cultures,” Gil said. “We hope we can inspire other people to work together and not be scared of working together.”

This is one of the pieces I liked inside the collection, it is a skin colour breastplate were small broken pieces of ceramic were embellished on top, the ceramic had traditional floral designs and mostly blue colours been used. Visually impressive and affective, but my favourite one was brown dress with metallic motif were embellished all over also two Hamas metalic design was used on middle of the waist and the bottom section of the dress. This is traditionally designed in detailed, which I loved it because its sronger piece and it reflect to the concept. The three-colour combination of brown, metal (which is silver) also blue lines were great together.
